ADI-6432 / 6432R

Bidirectional 64-channel, 192 kHz MADI <> AES/EBU format converter

Connectivity

  • 32 x AES/EBU I/O
  • 1 x MADI optical I/O
  • 1 x WordClock I/O
  • 1 x Com-Port I/O
  • 1 x MIDI I/O

The ADI-6432 converts all 64 channels of a single MADI stream into 32 AES/EBU ports and vice versa. It supports all 64 channels of the MADI format up to 48 kHz, 32 channels up to 96 kHz and 16 channels up to 192 kHz. When connected to the HDSP(e) MADI interface, the ADI-6432 becomes a powerful external 32-port AES/EBU interface. Two units provide the perfect digital multicore solution without the need for a computer.

ADI-6432R (Redundant): The R version is identical to the ADI-6432, but has two redundant power supplies and can therefore be connected to two different power sources. Should one of the power supplies fail, the ADI-6432R will continue to operate without interruption.

RME ADI 6432

Features

  • Up to 192 kHz with MADI and AES
  • Unique status displays for MADI and AES
  • SteadyClock for maximum jitter suppression and clock refresh
  • Completely MIDI remote controllable
  • Transmits MIDI over MADI
  • Transmits RS232 over MADI

The compact 19", 2U unit is used for format conversion from MADI to AES (block diagram) and vice versa. MADI provides 64 channels of 24-bit audio at up to 48 kHz sample rate, 32 channels at up to 96 kHz and 16 channels at up to 192 kHz. Transmission is via a single cable, either coaxial (BNC) or optical network cable. In both cases, cable lengths of well over 100 metres are possible. The AES channels are provided via 32 AES/EBU inputs and the same number of D-sub outputs. The ADI-6432 understands the MADI formats 56 channels, 64 channels, 48k and 96k frame at the input and can optionally generate these formats at the output.

SteadyClock(TM), a digitally controlled hybrid clock specially developed for MADI, allows operation without an additional word clock line. The reference clock is derived directly from the MADI signal in highest quality. RME's SteadyClock guarantees excellent behaviour in all clock modes. Due to its highly efficient jitter suppression, the ADI-6432 can clean up any clock signal - including AES/EBU or word clock - and make it available as reference clock at the word clock output. In addition, Intelligent Clock Control (ICC) ensures that the last valid sample frequency is maintained in the event of an input signal failure.

The ADI-6432 provides word clock in Single, Double and Quad Speed, distributes 96 kHz signals in the MADI data stream using the Double Wire method, but also handles the double MADI clock (96K Frame). The proven SyncAlign® and SyncCheck® technologies from other RME products ensure perfect synchronisation of all channels and easy detection of error conditions. Of course, any number of units can be cascaded and synchronised to word clock. All settings are retained when the unit is switched off. Automatic switching of the MADI input in case of error allows redundant operation between optical and coaxial input. Extensive status displays provide information on lock and sync status, audio information and the physical quality of the incoming signal. The front panel features a clean design and a 97-LED sync and audio status display. Next to this are a number of buttons with detailed LED function indicators. The detailed status display of all incoming and outgoing signals, including MIDI and RS232, is essential for professional applications. Errors can be seen at a glance. A lock function prevents accidental changes to settings (Lock Keys).

Serial / MIDI Extender

The ADI-6432 transmits 16 MIDI channels invisibly via MADI, with a full 64 audio channels. The same applies to RS232: whether 9600, 19200 or 115200 baud, thanks to the 9-pin COM port, the ADI-6432 can also be used as a serial cable extender without affecting the audio functions.

The ADI-6432 can also be fully remote controlled and configured via MIDI. The entire status of the unit, including the front panel indicators, can be queried via MIDI. Each ADI-6432 can be assigned its own ID, allowing multiple units to be controlled separately via a single MIDI channel. The ADI-6432 is compatible with MADI interfaces from Harrison, Sony, Merging, Lawo, Euphonix, Stagetec, Jünger, Audio Service and AMS. It offers a fantastic price/performance ratio, not only in a professional environment.
